Deborah’s Journey from Industrial Chemistry to Leading Global Customer Experience At AfriChange.

What does it take to move money across borders while turning thousands of stressed users into loyal fans? A lot of patience, certainly.

For Deborah, customer experience is not about closing tickets; it is about making and impact on people’s daily lives. Today, she manages the Customer Experience team at AfriChange, but her path into tech was anything but traditional.

From Industrial Chemistry to the Engine Room.

Deborah actually studied Industrial Chemistry, but her career took a pivot when Access Bank gave her a shot in customer experience.

“There is an unmatched magic in taking someone who walks in stressed, frustrated, or confused, and completely turning their day around until they leave smiling,” she shares. “That feeling of instant impact was priceless, and I’ve been chasing that high in fintech ever since.”

When she joined AfriChange as a Customer Success Specialist, the company processed payments along a single route: Canada to Nigeria. Back then, Deborah was in the trenches, handling live chats, calls, and emails. But as users asked for more, Deborah and her team gathered the data to advocate for new corridors.

As AfriChange expanded into the UK, US, Australia, and over 100 countries, Deborah’s career scaled with it. She moved into Onboarding, became a Lead, then Senior Lead, and eventually stepped into team management.

Evolving Beyond the Basics.

Stepping into leadership meant shifting from individual execution to system building. Deborah mastered global compliance, regional policies, and data analytics to bridge the gap between user feedback and product strategy.

“If you want the Product team to take your feedback seriously, you can’t bring vibes; you have to bring data,” Deborah explains.

Her drive for excellence did not go unnoticed. AfriChange fully funded her certifications, including her Customer Experience Professional (CCPX) credentials, helping her build deep technical and operational expertise, a journey that ultimately earned her Employee of the Year.

For Deborah, that support reflects the broader company culture. "Africhange didn't just encourage me; they funded my training. As the business scales, leadership makes sure the people behind it scale, too."

Building a Culture of Impact.

Deborah credits AfriChange’s low-bureaucracy, high-trust environment for giving her the room to innovate. Ideas are welcomed from every level, and remote work provides the flexibility to manage both work and life.

Her advice to junior talent looking to make a mark is simple: own the process from end to end.

“Support was never just about quick fixes; it was about digging up the root causes,” she says. “Become so obsessed with learning the ecosystem that you become the undeniable go-to person. Don’t just learn your narrow task, understand the entire user journey.”

The Person Behind the Platform.

Managing cross-border support for thousands of users requires high energy, but Deborah keeps her downtime low-key.

After a long day of optimizing workflows and analyzing retention data, her favorite way to unwind is unapologetic sleep, a niche podcast, or the ultimate movie night setup: a dark room, cold ice cream, and barbecue chicken.

And if she could pick a superpower? Teleportation. She would use it to scout new international markets where people need seamless cross-border payments before they even know to ask.

The Invisible Engine.

Deborah wishes more people understood the true scope of customer support. Far from being a passive department, it serves as the operational engine driving product improvement, retention, and growth.

“People think support is just saying, ‘We’re sorry for the inconvenience.’ It’s not. Support is product strategy, user retention, data analysis, and root-cause fixes. We are the engine room.”

From answering individual chats to building scalable systems for a global platform, Deborah’s journey shows what happens when personal ambition meets an environment that invests in its people—one solved issue at a time.

Deborah’s story is proof of what happens when personal ambition meets an environment built to support growth. Her journey reminds us that great customer experience is never just about resolving issues; it is about going the extra mile by building trust, advocating for users, and keeping the engine of a global financial platform running smoothly.
